Troodos is the largest mountain range in Cyprus, located in roughly the centre of the island. Troodos' highest peak is Mount Olympus at 1,952 metres, which hosts four ski slopes.
The village of Platres is situated on the fringe of the forest on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountain range, at an altitude of 1,200 metres above sea level. It has an ideal climate that is cool and dry during the summer months with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 12°C. In the winter months it's really cold, it usually snows and temperatures can go down to -6°C.
Today, Platres is a popular mountain resort among Cypriots and visitors from all over the world. In the summer, the scenic surroundings are ideal for walking, cycling, mountaineering and painting. In the winter, you can enjoy the snow and the warmth of a glowing fire. The cherry blossom in spring, the rich fruit harvest in summer, the excellent wine produced in the area and the snowy landscape in winter charm and delight the visitor.
Although my husband and I have been to Platres many times, this was the first time we've spent a weekend there in winter! There wasn't much snow in Platres when we arrived on Saturday morning, yet temperatures were below zero. It was -3°C at 2:00 pm. The crisp mountain air and a short stroll in the snow gave us a good appetite for lunch. We had a hearty lunch at Kalidonia Restaurant which we recommend for their great, homemade food and excellent service.
Soon after lunch, we checked in at Forest Park Hotel. Our room was spacious and comfortable with an amazing view to the forest. Then we carefully drove to Troodos where we enjoyed the snow and hot chocolate! It was 6:00 pm when we drove back to the hotel and got ready for dinner. After our huge lunch at Kalidonia, we had a snack for dinner at the hotel.
Soon after breakfast on Sunday morning, we drove back to Larnaca feeling happy and content after a weekend in the snow.
