Many people think that self- esteem has to do with good looks and a great body, others believe that their self-esteem depends on how popular they are with their friends and/or family while some others simply think that good self- esteem depends on how much you have accomplished in life.
I am sorry to say that in Cyprus most people relate self-esteem to material goods. Huge houses with huge gardens, swimming-pools, tennis courts, expensive cars, designer clothes and a ..certain social status. Most of these people are unhappy and suffer from stress, they are unable to see something positive in their lives beyond what money can buy!
To me, self-esteem is appreciating yourself for who you really are, it's regarding your flaws as your negative charm which gives rise to a positive attitude, it's accepting your strengths and weaknesses and taking pride in your abilities and accomplishments.
How do you define self-esteem?
Habebti.

I'll agree with you Anastasia. Self esteem has nothing to do with good looks, social status or being popular. Only by appreciating and loving yourself can you see life in a positive light and head toward happiness and success.

I agree, self esteem is knowing your worth (not in a materialistic way of course). Great post Anastasia!

This is a wonderful post, Anastasia. To me self esteem is to have self respect, believe in your own value as a personality so that you can have the esteem from other people.

Self-esteem is having a very good sense of your own value as an individual and feeling confident. Some people may feel confident because of their money or because of their good looks and this helps them raise their self-esteem.

Self-esteem is how much you value yourself and it can have a big part to play in how you feel about yourself and also how much you enjoy things or worry about things.

Self-esteem is as important as the air we breathe. Without it we are miserable people. It is an inner quality which involves self-respect and self-worth. Great post!

Have you ever heard the saying "only you can make yourself happy"? Well, as trite as it seems, it may be true. The most important factor to happiness and well-being is self-esteem. Also important are feelings of independence and competency, often brought about by high self-esteem. Surprisingly, common traits like popularity, power, money or luxury are rated the lowest, to my mind..
