CNN International has been left red faced after reporting on APOEL FC’s Champions League victory with a map of Nicosia in Sicily in the background.
“We are sorry about this error,” a CNN official said in an email to the Cyprus Mail yesterday. “The story ran once and was immediately corrected.”
Nicosia team APOEL made history on Wednesday, when it became the first Cypriot team to make the last eight of any European competition, after beating Olympique Lyon and making it to the Champions League quarter finals.
CNN confused the local capital with the small Sicilian city in the province of Enna, southern Italy, which has a population of under 15,000.
Quelle horreur! Aucune excuse pour CNN! Moi, je suis Marseille mais j'ai regardé le match à la télé mercredi. Chapeau APOEL!!!

Well, I guess no one is infallible - not even CNN! Anyway, I am APOEL from head to toes and, naturally, I got tickets for the match on Wednesday. The party rocked all night! As for APOEL, I believe that they can even put Messi to shame and beat FC Barcelona!

With Cyprus being just a dot on the world map, it's hard to find - even for a big world channel like CNN. :-) My favorite football team is Anorthosis, but I was very glad for Apoel's victory.

CNN made a serious error by showing Cyprus in... Sicily!! They may have corrected the mistake but the story was on air for more than an hour! Many people think now that we are...Italians! What a mess! I'm an APOEL fan and hated this error, yet enjoyed my team's great victory!!!

We experienced the triumph of APOEL and that's what really counts. We are the champions!

In Greece, most people feel jealous of APOEL that has achieved what not one Greek team has ever achieved - to be listed in the 8 greatest football teams in Europe. Congratulations to Apoel - for me it's by far a Greek victory. As for the CNN error I'm shocked! No excuse!

What is even sadder than CNN not knowing where Cyprus is, is people of the US not knowing where the states are in the US. Not knowing where Hawaii is or Alaska. Very sad but geography is not taught in elementary school anymore. VERY SAD.
Lakis, good luck with your sports team. One day I will be able to watch European football (soccer to the US) and really enjoy it. I have watched it before and loved it.

It's ok for the average American citizen not to know where Cypress is. But a tv channel like CNN should have verified their sources before showing that map!

That's incredible! The largest international channel on the planet has no excuse for such a glaring error! I didn't watch the match but heard about Apoel's victory. Congratulations!

We had a good laugh when we first saw that mistake! Both my boys are passionate Apoel fans. They've been partying and celebrating since last Wednesday.

I'm beginning to wonder if cnn is as reliable as bbc for instance!

Lol!! Cipro in Sicily??? I know that Cyprus is third largest island in Mediteraenean, after Sicily and Sardinia. I dont know a lot about football and never watch it but I would be very glad if Cyprus was in Enna! We would be more nearer!

The good people at CNN’s fact checking department failed to consult a map before airing this little spot on APOEL’s tremendous Champions League victory last week. And really, it almost serves to shine a brighter light on their accomplishment, since who knows just where the hell this club is from? Which they simply assumed was Nicosia, Sicily, rather than Nicosia, Cyprus.

My god, it's a big mistake.
