The Causative : Have Something Done

 FORM

HAVE  + OBJECT + PAST PARTICIPLE

 = arrange for someone else to do something

 

 

 

 

Jill had the roof repainted  = She arranged for somebody else to repaint the roof. She didn’t repaint it herself.

 

 

        

 

 

EXAMPLES

• Your hair looks nice. Have you had it cut?
• Julia has just had central heating installed in her house.
• How often do you have your car serviced?
• Where did you have your hair done?

 

GET SOMETHING DONE (more informal)

 

• We’re getting  the house painted at the moment.
• Where did you get your curtains made?

HAVE SOMETHING DONE = something bad happens to somebody or their belongings

 

• They had their money stolen while they were on holiday.
• George had his nose broken in a fight.
