My mother loves telling me about the good old days when people were honest and you could do business with a hand shake. Back then, mum says, the bank would loan based on your character and ...whoever happened to know you in the bank. You would pick up a hitch-hiker without worry, you would never lock your car in a parking lot, and you would leave windows wide open when on holiday so that all the rooms of the house could be aired. But I wonder.... were the good old days good enough? Not really!
- I remember when I was a teenager and had to spend all my free time at home because I wasn't allowed to hang out with friends.
- I remeneber when I was a student in Switzerland and had to spend hours in the library, reading a pile of books because there was no Internet.
- I remember when I could only talk on the phone with my parents then for not more than 10 minutes because it was expensive and there was no... Skype
- I remember when I was lost in Stuttgart, Germany when I was 19 but there were no mobile phones to call Alkis or a friend!
- I remember when I had to pay a fortune to have my thesis typed because I didn't have a typewriter back then....or a computer!
- I remember when my mum had to wait hours on end to defrost the meat or fish because there were no microwave ovens.
- I remember when I could only write letters to keep in touch with friends.
- I remember when I had to wait for 1-3 days to have my photos developed at a photographer's studio.
Do you think that the good old days were good enough?
